Every year I plan to take a trip up the Hudson to see the leaves change, and every year something happens to thwart my plans. The important thing is I’m not discouraged. I will be taking a ride up the Hudson as soon as my friends at the Weather Channel tell me it’s time.

Just because lower temperatures are coming, doesn’t mean the season has to end. What I’ve found is that in the Spring and Fall it is important to do more planning for each boat day. Take the weather and your guests comfort into consideration. Take extra sweatshirts, plot a course that won’t take you through rough water. A little salt spray in July is fun. In October it’s a day ender.

There are a number of marinas offering transient accomodations. One of the bigger, and nicer of these is Haverstraw Marina in Haverstraw, NY.

Seeing fall foliage by boat is a great way to end your boating season on a high note.

U.N. inconvenience not just on the roads

I had an appointment in Manhattan yesterday. As I was driving up the FDR, dreaming of boating rather than being stuck in traffic, I saw a flotilla of Coast Guard vessels gathered near the United Nations.

Whether on land or sea, turns out there is no escape in NYC this week from the U.N. mess.

In-water boat show season is here!

For the last 10 years or so, I have made going to the Norwalk, CT and Atlantic City, NJ in-water shows a big part of my reluctant farewell to summer ritual. Well, this year I’m adding a third show. For the next 2 weekends I will actually be working at the Tobay Beach Show out on Long Island. So, come on by and visit me at the Freedom Boat Club booth.
